What is Infant Mental Health?

Infant mental health is the thinking that all infants and toddlers are more likely to succeed later in life if they have a healthy, good relationship with the people to whom they are closest. An Infant Mental Health Specialist at Shiawassee Health & Wellness (SHW) helps support bonding and attachments between the parent and their young child, as well as promoting child development. This program will help a child grow and become secure and confident. A SHW Infant Mental Health Specialist also works with the parents on some of their own mental health needs that could get in the way of successful parenting. This is a home-based program, which means that the SHW Mental Health Specialist provides the service in the infants’ home.

Parents who have a newborn child, birth until their fourth birthday, can qualify for Infant Mental health services. This also includes women who are pregnant and in their 3rd tri-semester and are faced with insecurities, depression, anxiety, contemplation of adoption, or other concerns that could get in the way of successful parenting.

To begin services, please call Shiawassee Health & Wellness at (989) 723-6791 to conduct what is called a phone intake. This intake is designed to gather enough information to be able to direct you toward the right services for you. You may also walk into Shiawassee Health & Wellness during regular business hours to do the intake face-to-face. Once the intake is completed, you will be scheduled for an assessment at Shiawassee Health & Wellness. Again, this will help determine what program best meets your needs and the needs of your family.

All consumers complete a financial assessment to determine their ability to pay for services. The majority of those who are served in the Infant Mental Health program are Medicaid recipients. If someone does not have insurance, Shiawassee Health & Wellness will work out a co-pay based on their ability to pay. Private insurance companies do not reimburse for home-based treatment. Therefore, consumers who have private insurance may be referred to Outpatient Services.

If you have any questions about Infant Mental Services, to check for eligibility or would like more information, please call Shiawassee Health & Wellness at (989) 723-6791 during regular business hours and either a SHW representative or an IMH Specialist will return your call..
