Established in 1994, New Directions, Drop-In Center is one of many drop-in centers located in Michigan. While drop-in centers work in close cooperation with each county community mental health center, they are peer-ran facilities for self-help, advocacy, and education. Individuals develop their own programs to supplement existing behavioral health services. Sometimes individuals of behavioral health services feel socially isolated, lonely, and may not have many supports. At New Directions, people join-together to socialize, make new friends, or simply to relax in a non-judgmental atmosphere of acceptance and understanding from others who have “been there.”
New Directions is open to any adult residing in Shiawassee County that is 18 years of age or older. You must be in mental health treatment, received treatment in the past, or plan on getting treatment to become a member at New Directions. Membership is free! Persons interested in attending New Directions may call the center or “drop in” to talk to one of our staff about becoming a member. Every new member receives a warm welcome and a tour of the New Directions facility.
Among the attractions found at New Directions are a media room with big-screened television, arts and craft area, pool table, and air hockey table. A fully equipped kitchen serves meals and coffee is served daily from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. A feature of New Directions, not found in all drop-in centers, is a year-round schedule of special events such as cook-outs, monthly birthday celebrations, holiday celebrations, trips to various attractions and festivals that includes local beaches, parks, and other special events, move-me club, garden club, bingo, and membership meetings implementing member feedback. The New Directions facility is also fully equipped with a workout area, showers, and a laundry room.
